Ingas Takes the Stage!

The performance space isn’t completely done — we still need to add finishing cement to make it look pretty, complete rear wind-break wall, and landscape a little — but it was usable, so we had a little dedication and blessing (Christian and Aymara traditional!) with participation of lots of students. Thank you all who donated so generously. This is a resource that simply would have been impossible without your help, and the hard physical labor of the young people of Elizardo Perez High School and other members of the community of Ingas. It was a happy day despite overcast skies as the students took the stage!

The young people are thrilled. It will get a lot of use over the years. In the picture above, a student inveighs against the lingering racism in Bolivian society!

Here are the rest of the photos. Next year, Matt Mezzacappa, of St. V’s in Germantown, may come to direct!

The Context of Systemic Change || El Contexto de Cambio Sistémico

Most of the folks in my “vincentian” world have heard of the notion of systemic change. A good link for understanding it can be found on our VinFormation website. Rarely do we speak of the macro-factors surrounding our efforts — the regional and global structures and events that have a powerful influence upon the projects we hope to initiate or have initiated. I hope, by the turn of the year, to write something substantial about this topic. This link, about the influence of China in South America, is a good example of the very large structures that surround our efforts. If you read the material on VinFormation, and read this article, I’d appreciate any insights you might have.

Otherwise, all is well in my life here in Bolivia. We just celebrated All Saints and All Souls day. We did suffer a tragedy in Mocomoco: our mayor, Pascual Máximo Kuno Condori, died in car accident over the weekend. Please keep his family in your prayers.

Celebrating St. Francis in Humanata

We used to have a confrere serving in a town called Humanata. After discussions with the bishop, it was decided that we would consolidate our efforts in Italaque and Mocomoco and the bishop would look for a pastor for Humanata. To date, none has appeared, and I have been going to Humanata about once a month to celebrate Eucharist there, and occasionally visit smaller communities nearby. This month I went for the feast of St. Francis, patron of Humanata, which they celebrate on the 11th of October, the octave of the actual feast. It was a beautiful celebration, with infant baptisms, as well as some full initiations (baptism, confirmation and eucharist) of young people. Here are some more photos.
